Lesson 23: To get & to do

EasyIrish.com Lesson 23We are continuing in our series of looking at lrish verbs. This lesson will look at two more irregular ones: to get and to do/make in the past tense. We’ll practice some associated vocabulary that you can use with these verbs. The phrase of the week is a food themed proverb. Check amach é!

Target language

To get:
Stem and order/command form of the verb is ‘Faigh’.

Question form:             An bhfuair tú?            =          Did you get?
Positive answer:           Fuair mé                     =          I got.
Negative answer:          Ní bhfuair mé              =          I did not get.

Q) An bhfuair tú  litir ar maidin?
Did you get a letter this morning?

A+) Fuair.       or        Fuair, fuair mé litir ar maidin.
Yes.                              Yes, I got a letter this morning..

A-) Ní bhfuair.                        or        Ní bhfuair, ni bhfuair mé litir ar maidin.
No.                                                        No, I didn’t get a letter this morning.

Order or Command form:
Faigh litir ón Dochtúir.
Get a letter from the Doctor.

Ná faigh!
Do not get!

 

To do/ make:
Stem and order/command form of verb is ‘Déan’.

Question form:            An ndearna tú?           =          Did you do or make?
Positive answer:           Rinne mé.                    =          I did or I made.
Negative answer:         Ní dhearna mé.           =          I did not do or make.

Q) An ndearna tú cupán tae/caife?
Did you make a cup of tea/coffee?

A+) Rinne.      Or       Rinne, rinne mé cupán deas tae.
Yes.                              Yes, I made a nice cup of tea.

A-) Ní dhearna.           Or       Ní dhearna mé tae nó coffee.
No.                                           I didn’t make tea nor coffee.

Order or Command form:
Déan cupán tae/coffee dom(h)!          Na déan sin!
Make a cup of tea/coffee for me!           Don’t do that!
